2014年夏、バンド活動を経てたどり着いた表現として、「GAMEBOY」での作曲を開始。

チップチューンアーティスト向けの作曲ソフト「LSDj (Little Sound Dj)」で作った楽曲を多数発表。

2017年、世界最大級のチップチューンフェスティバル「Square Sounds Tokyo」に出演。

2019年、チップチューンミュージックを中心とした自主レーベル「TBKgao」の運営を開始。

2020年、MSX2の新作ゲーム「キャラバンブーマー」にBGMを提供。

2022年、LSDjの影響を受けて生まれた手のひらサイズのハードシンセ、M8 Trackerに没頭。M8 TrackerにGAMEBOY、ギター、ピッチを上げた自らのボーカルを加えて、3rd album「TOBOX」を発表。

2024年、ATARIとWayForwardが制作したゲーム「YARS RISING」に楽曲「Nouveau Monde」を提供し、歌唱、主旋律の作曲、作詞を担当。

現在は、合成音声、音MAD、素のMIDI音源に着目した音楽を目指して活動中。

名前の由来

「とぼけがお」という名前は、バンドをしていたころに生まれました。当時は、スタジオ練習の予約を思いつきのバンド名で入れて遊んでいて、これはそのうちの一つです。「ハナレグミ」や「ばちかぶり」のように響きのよい5文字の名前でいくつも予約しましたが、スタジオのスタッフに「良いバンド名だね」と言われたのは、なぜか「とぼけがお」だけでした。それがうれしくて、この名前にしています。

In the summer of 2014, Tobokegao started composing music on the Game Boy, a way of making music they arrived at through their band activities.

They have released many songs made with LSDj (Little Sound Dj), a composition program used by chiptune artists, and gained recognition.

In 2017, on the strength of that work, they performed at Square Sounds Tokyo, one of the largest chiptune festivals in the world.

In 2019, they started TBKgao, an independent label focused on chiptune music.

In 2020, they provided BGM for the new MSX2 game Caravan Boomer alongside a gorgeous team of composers.

In 2022, they became deeply immersed in the M8 Tracker, a palm-sized hardware synthesizer inspired by LSDj, and released their third album TOBOX, featuring sounds from a Game Boy, guitar and their own pitched-up vocals.

In 2024, they contributed the song “Nouveau Monde” to YARS RISING, a game by ATARI and WayForward, handling the vocals, main melody and lyrics.

They are currently making music centered on VOCALOID and other voice synthesis, OTO-MAD, and Pure MIDI.

The name

The name “Tobokegao” goes back to my band days. Back then, I booked studio rehearsals under all sorts of made-up band names for fun, choosing five-syllable names that sounded catchy, like “Hanaregumi” or “Bachikaburi.” For some reason, “Tobokegao” was the only one a studio staff member praised as a good name. That made me happy, and the name stuck.
