無料、Windows(VST3)・Mac(VST3・AU)

無料、Windows 64bit(VST3)。BOOTHでサンプル曲付きのバージョン(500円)もあります

This is an updated roundup based on Umeboshi Chazuke’s 2021 article on their blog Ajitama Note, “10 Sound Sources for Making Bleepy Music” (in Japanese) and theta’s software page, with more tools added.
Start with free plugins
These load in your usual DAW and play like any other instrument.
Magical 8bit Plug 2 (YMCK): NES-style pulse waves (bleepy, good for melodies), triangle (round, good for bass) and noise (hissy, good for drums). If you’re not sure where to start, start here. Free, Windows and Mac (VST3, AU)

Magical FDS Plug (YMCK): recreates the Famicom Disk System sound chip. Just released in June 2026. Free, Windows (VST3) and Mac (VST3, AU)

- YMCK’s synths tend to produce aliasing (a gritty buzz that isn’t in the original sound) on high notes, so keep that in mind.
New DoReFAMI (theta) v1.7.1: recreates the NES sound chip, with detailed sound design. Free, Windows 64-bit (VST3). A version with sample songs is also sold on BOOTH (500 yen)

Twin DoReFAMI (theta) v1.0.1: recreates wavetable sound chips (the kind used in the GAMEBOY and others), where you draw a short waveform yourself to make your own sound. Free, Windows 64-bit (VST3). The same author’s DWMEditor helps with drawing waveforms

Soraboy (ShadowSora) v1.1.1: inspired by the GAMEBOY sound chip. Free (tips welcome), Windows 64-bit and Mac (VST3)

SANA 8BIT VST (Masaki Mori) Beta v2.00: a simple synth for chiptune. You can switch between waveforms such as square waves, draw your own waveforms with “waveform memory”, and use pitch sweep, vibrato, and arpeggios. Free, Windows (VST, VST3, 32-bit and 64-bit) and Mac (VST, AU)

C700 (osoumen) ver20211031: a sampler that recreates the SNES sound chip. You load your own waveforms and sounds into it. It can also export your song as an SNES music file (.spc). Free, Windows (VST2) and Mac (VST2, AU)

VOPMex (osoumen) 20210501: osoumen’s updated version of Sam’s VOPM, which recreates the YM2151 (OPM) FM chip used in ’80s and ’90s arcade games and the X68000. It runs in 64-bit DAWs and on Apple Silicon. If you connect GIMIC (a USB device for real sound chips) with a YM2151 installed, you can play authentic hardware sounds (Windows also requires c86ctl). Free, Windows (VST, 32-bit and 64-bit) and Mac (VST, AU)

Image: from a post on XOPNA FM Synth v1.0.1: torupi’s plugin recreating the YM2608 (OPNA) FM chip. Free (600 yen support option), Windows only (VST3)

Effects
Deltanizer (theta) v2.0.0: gives sounds you’ve programmed the texture of the NES’s DPCM channel (the gritty, rough sound used for drums and voices). Free, Windows 64-bit only (VST3)

Interruptor (theta) v0.0.2: recreates “interrupts,” the old game-music trick of slipping quick sound effects or drums into the gaps of a melody. Free, Windows 64-bit only (VST3)

chipcrusher (Plogue): adds the texture of old consoles after the fact, such as the slightly gritty voices and drums of the NES or the SNES’s distinctive roughness and echo. $39

Trackers and dedicated software (free unless a price is given)
You program within the limits of the console’s sound chip, which makes it easier to sound like the real thing.
FamiStudio 4.5.3: for the NES. It has a piano roll, so it’s approachable even if you’ve never used a tracker. Windows, Mac, Linux

Image: provided by Rei8bitKiraStudio 1.1.2: a new program released in 2026 by FamiStudio’s author (BleuBleu). It has a piano roll and offers NES, GAMEBOY and Yamaha FM sound chips, among others. It values ease of use over hardware accuracy. The Windows version is free, and there are also Mac, iPhone, iPad and Android versions

Image: provided by Rei8bitDn-FamiTracker Dn0.5.3: an NES tracker, descended from FamiTracker. Windows only

Image: provided by Rei8bitFurnace 0.6.8.3: a tracker that supports many sound chips, including the NES, GAMEBOY and Mega Drive. Windows, Mac, Linux

Image: provided by Rei8bit
- furnace-piano-roll v14: a fork of Furnace that adds a piano roll and more. Free, Windows, Linux

Image: provided by Rei8bitRenoise 3.5.4: a tracker that works like a DAW, great for making music with samples. It also supports plugins like VSTs. 76 EUR, Windows, Mac, Linux

PICO-8 v0.2.7: a “fantasy console” for making whole retro pixel-art games. It comes with built-in music and sound effect editors for making chiptunes. $15, Windows, Mac, Linux, Raspberry Pi

TIC-80 v1.4.1: a “fantasy computer” for making tiny games, with built-in 4-channel music and sound effect editors. Free (PRO version with extra features is $10), Windows, Mac, Linux, Android, browser. I also posted a video on X of a wavetable synth I tried in TIC-80

Piston Collage (pxtone) ver.0.9.4.56: a music program where you put pitches on waveforms you’ve drawn or WAVs you’ve loaded and arrange them. You can make a whole song in it alone, and it’s easy to use. Compilations of songs made with it still come out, such as “PXTUNES 10th Anniversary: THE FUTURE OF PXTONE” from October 2026. Free, Windows only

ptcollab v0.6.4.11: a music editor built on the pxtone (Piston Collage) engine that lets you make a song together with friends over the network, with MIDI input support. Free, Windows, Mac, Linux

Bamboo Tracker v0.6.5: a tracker for the YM2608 FM chip used in the PC-8801 and PC-9801. Free, Windows, Mac, Linux

Older plugins (free)
These are old plugins that are no longer updated, mostly ones I keep on my own computer. Most are 32-bit Windows VSTs, which may not load directly in a 64-bit DAW. REAPER has a built-in bridge and loads them directly, but other DAWs may need a bridging tool such as jBridge (€14.99). “Today, try X” means an easier tool is available now.

The download also includes the first version, which has fewer options but more oscillator choices. Woolyss, which hosted it, closed in 2026, so the link goes to the Internet Archive copy. Windows (VST, 32-bit). Today, try Soraboy

Pure6581 (L-Day) v1.4: a synth imitating the Commodore 64 sound chip (SID). It plays waveforms one after another, which suits drum sounds. The author’s page and Woolyss, which hosted it, are both gone, so the link goes to the Internet Archive copy. Windows (VST, 32-bit)

Image: from plugINDEXminiSID (de la Mancha): a synth using waveforms sampled from a real SID (6581) chip, with two oscillators, sync, and an arpeggiator. Windows (VST, 32-bit)

Image: from Plugins 4 FreeDrSid (Odosynths) v1.0: lo-fi Commodore 64-style drums. It comes with 320 samples that you assign to six slots. Windows (VST, 32-bit)

Image: from Plugins 4 FreeBleep (ToneBytes) v1.1: a synth inspired by the SID rather than an emulation of it. Each oscillator has its own envelope and filter. Windows (VST, 32-bit)

Image: from Plugins 4 FreeymVST (gwEm) v1.0: a 2003 plugin recreating the Atari ST sound chip (YM2149). For an authentic sound, the author suggests running no more than three at once. Windows (VST, 32-bit). Today, try Shiru’s VT2i

Chip32 (Sam): a wavetable synth by the author of VOPM. You draw an 8-bit, 32-value waveform on screen to make SCC-like sounds, with an envelope, filter, and bitcrusher. The link has 32-bit Windows and Mac builds (VST). There’s also a 64-bit v0.10 port by kaetemi, which needs the Visual Studio 2013 redistributable

Image: from Plugins 4 FreeLM358N (32mbit / SECRETCODE): an effect imitating the character of the cheap, slow op-amps used in old consoles and home computers. It adds distortion, noise, and a bass boost, along with a simple low-pass filter. The author made it mainly for chiptune mastering and says it suits FM synths especially well. I couldn’t find a download page, so I’m hosting the original files here, since the readme says it’s public domain. The author notes it isn’t thoroughly tested, and there’s no warranty. Windows (VST, 32-bit and 64-bit)
Sample packs
Bitkits (Uppercussion): ten 8-bit drum kits. Besides kicks, snares and hi-hats, there are lots of bleepy sound effects. Free
