My Unease with Humor

The line between jokes that make me laugh and jokes that don't

I love works made in the spirit of parody and silly pranks, and while I was watching otoMAD videos like that, my mylist for the first half of this year hit its 500-video limit before I knew it.

Recently, though, a joke image came across my feed and irritated me without my knowing why, and I couldn’t laugh at it at all. I wanted to know what makes the difference, so below, I’d like to think about what makes me laugh and what doesn’t.

I thought I just didn’t like jokes about people

The image lumped people of a certain type together and made fun of them, along the lines of “people like this are 100% like that.” So at first I wondered whether I just didn’t like that way of handling jokes.

But when I thought about it more, I started to feel that wasn’t quite it, because otoMAD is full of videos that play around with the voices and footage of celebrities and YouTubers. And I actually laugh at those videos a lot.

Thinking about it that way, whether people are made into jokes didn’t seem to be the cause.

Maybe it’s about how you treat the material

When I went back through the otoMAD videos that make me laugh, they had things in common.

  • A lot of work goes into them. The voices are cut one note at a time, tuned, and packed in with good timing. You can tell right away how much time went into them.
  • They really look at the material itself. They use the person’s actual voice and gestures, after listening closely and choosing carefully.
  • The material becomes the star. In the finished video, the person in the clips often looks cool, or clearly loved.

But when I think back on the image I couldn’t laugh at, none of these applied. It didn’t seem to be looking at any real person, just using a mold of a certain kind of person from inside someone’s head. Not much work seemed to have gone into it either; it felt like words dropped into a familiar format. The people lumped together never get to look good, either.

Both use people as their subject, but the ones that look closely at the material and put real care into it make me laugh, and the ones that just fit people into a mold don’t. Maybe that’s how I sort them in my head.

Something similar bugged me before

Around 2020, I saw posts imitating a certain copywriter’s writing style going viral, and they bothered me (partly because I’ve never really liked that person’s way of thinking).

Back then an acquaintance told me, “With style imitation, I think, they’ve got a sharp eye for making it sound alike, and they’re putting in the effort,” and that calmed me down a little. Looking back, I think that was about how you engage with the material too. If something is carefully observed and patiently made to resemble its source, I can respect it as craft.

But for things that only borrow the format and show no effort, I couldn’t see them that way. I think this image was probably one of those.

About jokes that aim for hits by sheer numbers

Some people put out lots of joke posts, and one of them goes wildly viral. I can see they’re doing it well, but it seems I can’t laugh at that either. Maybe it’s because it looks like aiming for a hit through sheer numbers instead of putting in work.

In 2021, I wrote this:

I feel like conversation is healthier when you don’t think of it as material for jokes

Once you start thinking of conversation as a stock of jokes, I feel like the person you’re talking with turns into material.

Sarcasm wears me out a little

It seems I also struggle with meanness wrapped in a cute drawing or a joke format.

When it’s shaped like a joke, the one who said it can get away with “I was only kidding.” If no names are given, it isn’t clear who it’s about, either. The one receiving it is left to work out alone whether it’s serious or a joke, and whether it’s about them or not.

When someone says everything sarcastically, you can’t even tell whether their compliments are sincere. Decoding all of that is really tiring.

About the word “humor”

When I say I don’t like these things, people sometimes take me for someone who doesn’t get humor.

In 2019, I wrote, “Seeing the word ‘humor’ used in a ‘read the room’ kind of way leaves me feeling empty.” I think it felt like humor was being used as a yardstick for reading the room.

I think I do like humor itself. What I don’t like may be borrowing the shape of humor to push pain onto someone.

What I want to keep in mind myself

This is less about judging others and more about how I want to make things.

Since around 2021, I’ve tried to stop using sarcastic memes, because I thought quite a few people could get hurt. I’m writing this piece, too, hoping to take out the poison and the thorns as much as I can, as I try to whenever I write about things I don’t like.

I don’t think I’m a funny person, and I’m not very good at getting laughs, but I can choose where I laugh.

Having put all this into words, I’ve decided that when a joke I can’t laugh at irritates me, I’ll use it as a reminder: “I’ll do things my own way.” I hope to keep enjoying otoMAD and laughing, and to keep making things I’m satisfied with…!
