Tobokegao and Chiptune
The difference between the parties I avoid and the places where I feel at ease
I love chiptune. I still love the sound of the GAMEBOY, and the raw sound of hardware MIDI modules.
Lately, though, I noticed that there are some chiptune parties I keep avoiding. At the same time, there are other chiptune places where I feel completely fine. I wanted to know what makes the difference, so I went back through my old posts and messages and thought about it.
I thought it might be the genre
At first I thought I just didn’t get along with the pop-leaning side of chiptune.
But when I looked closer, that didn’t fit.
- I can listen to the music without any problem. I only feel uneasy when I see announcements, photos, or the buzz on social media.
- If the same pop-leaning tracks played at a different place, I would probably be fine.
- Pop-leaning events in the Kanto area seem fine too, as long as nobody from my past troubles is involved. I really do enjoy otoMAD and Vocaloid events.
So it didn’t seem to be about the genre, or the region.
The line: people and places tied to hard times
The places I avoid have something in common: either someone who was involved when things went badly for me is there, or it is a place where things once got too hard for me.
In 2017, not long after I moved to the Kanto area, I was booked for an event. A week before the show there was a rehearsal and a meeting. At the rehearsal, I really felt how different my taste was from the other performers’. At the meeting, where I was meeting many people for the first time, I fumbled my self-introduction, and someone made fun of it.
After that I couldn’t face people, so on the day of the show, I handed over my song data and a friend played the set for me (a 45-minute noise set on a single GAMEBOY Advance SP). I’m still grateful to the friend who stepped in.
Back then I wrote to another friend:
When I pick up on the other performers’ vibe before the show, my own voice gets drowned out by theirs before I even realize it, and my resolve snaps right then and there.
When I see an announcement or a photo today and feel “this isn’t for me,” I think it’s probably the same thing. Maybe I’ve been getting stuck in the same spot for a long time.
There were more hard times in the scene after that. Around 2022, I stopped following the whole scene and started choosing what to listen to by the music itself.
What the places where I feel at ease have in common
There are also places where I feel fine: FUCKOKA, a crew in Fukuoka that started out playing GAMEBOYs on the street, and cafe la siesta, a small cafe in Kyoto where people who make chiptune gather.
When I looked into them, the two had things in common.
- People who were there first handed GAMEBOYs and music software to newcomers and grew the circle that way.
- They recruited performers widely from outside instead of keeping it among insiders.
Maybe I like places where people don’t hide their mischievous side and speak their minds openly, under their own names. What I find hard is teasing that hides behind a friendly face.
I used to watch cafe la siesta’s streams a lot, ever since I lived in Hokkaido, and sometimes sent a tip. The streams seem to have stopped lately, so I haven’t been able to watch, but supporting them from afar was just the right distance for me.
I haven’t had much to do with FUCKOKA so far. Soon, though, I’m planning to go see an event where some of its members are playing, in person.
This is how I take part now
I think there are levels of taking part.
- Listening to the music
- Watching streams
- Going as an audience member
- Performing
- Running my own event
What I’m fine with is listening, and anything where I choose the people I work with (performing without going to the venue, or my own events). It gets hard when I can’t choose who I share the space with.
With most of the people from those hard times, I’ve slowly come to some kind of terms. There are a few I still can’t forgive. But I’ve come to feel that even if I forgive someone, I don’t have to force myself to get close to them.
I think I step away from places that don’t suit me because I don’t want to stop loving what I love. If anyone is struggling with something similar, I’d like to say: you don’t have to take part in everything.
I’ll keep loving chiptune. I hope to keep listening to it, making it, and playing it in places that suit me…!
